"Add fibre" is one of the most common lines in a brief and one of the least specific. The fibres available to a powder manufacturer behave so differently that choosing between them is a product decision, not an ingredient substitution.
Which fibre should you actually specify?
The four that dominate instant powder work are inulin/FOS, psyllium husk, polydextrose and resistant dextrin. They differ on solubility, viscosity, sweetness, tolerance and cost — and the one you pick determines what the drink is like to swallow.

Why is psyllium the difficult one?
Because it hydrates fast and keeps thickening. A psyllium drink that is pleasant at the moment of mixing can be difficult to drink a minute later, and in a filling line the same property makes it prone to bridging and to picking up ambient moisture.
If psyllium is in the brief, three things need deciding early:
- Mesh size. Coarse husk and fine powder are different products with different mouthfeel and different dispersion behaviour.
- The instruction on the pack. "Drink immediately" is a formulation consequence, not a legal formality.
- Dose honesty. A psyllium dose large enough to be functional is large enough to be noticed. Design the format around it rather than hiding it.
What does fibre do to the rest of the formula?
- Sweetness shifts. Inulin contributes mild sweetness; polydextrose and resistant dextrin barely do. Swapping fibres changes the sugar system.
- Volume. Functional fibre doses are bulky and compete for sachet space with protein, collagen or anything else you wanted in there.

What about the tolerance problem?
Fibre products generate more consumer complaints about bloating and gas than almost any other category, and it is usually dose escalation rather than a defect. A product that starts users at the full functional dose will produce complaints in week one.
Two practical responses, both formulation decisions:
- Blend fibres rather than relying on a single one at a high dose, so no single mechanism dominates.
- Build a step-up instruction into the pack — half serving for the first week. It costs nothing and it materially changes the review profile.
What claims can a fibre product make?
Claims about dietary fibre content are tied to how much is actually in the serving, and the permitted wording differs by market. Settle the claim and the serving size together — a claim that requires a dose the format cannot hold is a reformulation waiting to happen.
