OEM Bird's Nest Powder Manufacturer in Malaysia

OEM & private label bird's nest powder - traditional sachet drink for wellness ranges, Halal manufactured in sachet or bulk for your brand.

What is edible bird's nest?

Nests built from the solidified saliva of edible-nest swiftlets, birds of the genera Aerodramus, Hydrochous, Schoutedenapus and Collocalia. They are harvested from caves and from purpose-built swiftlet houses, cleaned, and sold as one of the highest-value food ingredients in the region.

Edible bird's nest is also called swallow nest, and it occupies a position in Chinese food culture closer to a gift than a grocery. Malaysia is a significant producer, and swiftlet farming is a recognised industry here rather than a cottage activity.

The two things a buyer cares about are therefore not taste. Bird's nest is mild - faintly eggy, slightly marine, largely texture. What is being bought is authenticity and how much is actually in the product, and both of those are documentation questions.

That makes this the most claim-sensitive flavour in the library. A bird's nest drink is sold on what is in it, so everything downstream depends on being able to show it.

What does bird's nest taste like?

Very mild and faintly savoury, with a slight egg-white and marine note and almost no sweetness of its own. In drinks the character comes from the rock sugar and pandan it is traditionally cooked with rather than from the nest.

SweetnessBitternessRoastCreaminessAroma
CharacterLevelWhy
SweetnessMediumTraditionally cooked with rock sugar; the nest itself contributes none.
BitternessLowNothing bitter in the ingredient.
RoastLowNo roasting - bird's nest is soaked and gently cooked, never browned.
CreaminessMediumThe appeal is a soft, slippery texture rather than fat-derived richness.
AromaLowVery faint; a strong smell in bird's nest is usually a sign of a problem.

Indicative flavour positioning to help write a product brief. It is not sensory panel data, and the finished taste is set with you at sampling stage.

What has to be decided to make a bird's nest drink as a powder?

What the content claim will be and how it will be proved. Bird's nest is expensive and among the most adulterated premium ingredients in the region, so the specification is really a sourcing and documentation exercise with a formulation attached.

  • The claim is the product. A buyer choosing a bird's nest drink is buying the ingredient, not the taste. Whatever content is stated has to be supported by purchase records and supplier documentation for the life of the product.
  • Adulteration is a known risk in this trade. Because the material is valuable and visually hard to judge once processed, supplier qualification and incoming testing matter more here than for any other ingredient in this library.
  • Texture is most of what is being paid for, and powder loses it. The strands and slipperiness are central to the traditional preparation. A powder sachet delivers the ingredient and the ritual, not the mouthfeel, and honest products are built accordingly.
  • Health claims change the regulatory route. Bird's nest attracts wellness positioning. A claim can move the product from food to supplement and require registration with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency before sale.

What are the Halal risk points in a bird's nest powder?

This is the one flavour here where the headline ingredient is animal derived, so it needs its own certification rather than inheriting the plant's. Cleaning and processing of the nest matter as much as the source.

Bird's nest is consumed widely in the Muslim world and Malaysia certifies it, but the certificate has to cover the specific supplier and their cleaning and processing operation - not the ingredient category in the abstract. Because nests are cleaned of feathers and debris by hand or with processing aids, the operation itself is part of what is assessed. Treating bird's nest as automatically acceptable because it is traditional is the mistake to avoid.

D&O manufactures under JAKIM Halal certification to MS 1500, and every raw material on a Halal-certified line carries its own valid certificate, which for this ingredient means supplier-level documentation. The general failure points are listed in Top 10 Ingredients That Fail Halal Certification.

Which pack formats suit bird's nest powder?

Sachet, stick pack, jar or bulk. The format is chosen with the formula rather than after it, because it decides how the powder is protected from moisture and how the buyer meets the product.

FormatWhat it suits
SachetThe dominant format. A fixed single dose is what makes a content claim meaningful and checkable.
Stick packGift and travel presentation, which suits a product bought as a present.
JarUncommon - a scooped dose undermines the per-serving claim that the product is sold on.
BulkFor brands doing their own filling or combining it into a wider wellness range.

Where is this manufactured, and under what certification?

At D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. in Lahat, Perak, Malaysia — six factory units certified Halal by JAKIM (MS 1500), GMP to MS 1514:2022 (SIRIM QAS, cert. GMP 00203), HACCP to MS 1480:2019 (SIRIM QAS, cert. HACCP 00425), ISO 22000 (SIRIM QAS, cert. FSMS 00229) and MeSTI (Ministry of Health, cert. ME0523069-0/1).

The plant is outside Ipoh, between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with road access to both Port Klang and Penang Port for export. Four units are used for production and two for packing and assembly, 4,000 sq ft each.

D&O is the powder functional food manufacturer of ORIZI Group. Liquid and ready-to-drink formats are made by Nutrizens Wellness Sdn. Bhd.; cosmetics, skincare and personal care by Dr Orizi; medical devices by Skyler and Imedify.

Certificates and their certified scope are supplied on request. JAKIM Halal certification is verifiable in the MYeHALAL directory, MeSTI in the Ministry of Health FoSIM system, and the GMP, HACCP and ISO 22000 certificates with SIRIM QAS International. The MS standards themselves are published by Standards Malaysia, and ISO 22000 by ISO.

Frequently asked questions

Is bird's nest actually made from saliva?
Yes. Edible-nest swiftlets build their nests from solidified saliva, and that is the material harvested and cleaned for consumption. It is not a figure of speech or a translation artefact.
Is bird's nest Halal?
It is widely consumed in the Muslim world and is certified in Malaysia, but certification is supplier-specific rather than automatic. Because nests are cleaned of feathers and debris with processing aids, the cleaning operation is part of what gets assessed, so documentation is required at supplier level.
How is authenticity verified?
Through supplier qualification, purchase records and incoming testing. Bird's nest is valuable and hard to judge visually once processed, which makes it a known target for adulteration. A content claim is only as good as the documentation chain behind it.
Can a powder reproduce the texture of cooked bird's nest?
No. The strands and slippery mouthfeel are central to the traditional preparation and do not survive into a sachet. A powder delivers the ingredient and the daily ritual, which is what the format is honestly sold on.
Will my product be classified as a food or as a health supplement?
The claim decides it, not the format. A powder sold as a drink is a food under the Food Act 1983. The moment it carries a health claim or a therapeutic dose it falls to the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency, which requires product registration before sale. Settle this before artwork, because it changes the label.
Which certification does my product actually need?
It depends on the product and the destination market, not on the factory. MeSTI is the Malaysian baseline for food premises, GMP and HACCP cover process control, and ISO 22000 is the international food safety management standard. D&O holds all four plus JAKIM Halal, so the question at briefing is which ones your buyer or regulator asks to see.
Who is responsible for the label and artwork?
The brand owner owns the artwork and the claims on it. D&O supplies the product data the label must carry, such as ingredient declaration and nutritional information, and will flag where a claim would change the product's regulatory classification. Final approval of the printed label stays with the brand.
Where are the products made?
In Lahat, Perak, Malaysia. The plant runs six production and packaging halls plus an on-site R&D lab built in 2026. Perak sits in the middle of peninsular Malaysia with road access to Penang and Port Klang, which matters for export lead times more than most brand owners expect.
