OEM Gula Melaka Latte Powder Manufacturer in Malaysia

OEM & private label gula melaka latte powder - palm sugar coffee with creamer, Halal manufactured in sachet, stick pack or bulk for your brand.

What is gula melaka and why is it in a latte?

Gula melaka is Malaysian palm sugar, boiled down from palm sap into dense blocks with a smoky caramel character. Paired with coffee and milk it gives a latte a local identity that cane sugar cannot, which is why the combination travelled from kopitiam to café menu.

Palm sugar is made by reducing the sap tapped from a palm, and sugars from different palms are processed the same way and used interchangeably. What separates gula melaka from refined cane sugar is that it is barely refined at all: the minerals and the caramelised notes from the boil stay in, which is where the smoky, almost toffee depth comes from.

That depth is also why it carries a drink rather than just sweetening one. In a cane-sugar latte the sugar disappears behind the coffee. Gula melaka does not - it sits alongside the roast as a second flavour, which is what makes the pairing read as Malaysian rather than as a flavoured coffee.

The same sugar anchors cendol, kaya and a long list of Malaysian desserts, so a brand launching a gula melaka latte is borrowing a flavour its market already recognises instead of teaching a new one.

What does gula melaka latte taste like?

Sweet and rounded, with a smoky caramel depth that cane sugar does not have, softened by milk and backed by coffee. Less sharp than a standard latte and noticeably more aromatic, with a toffee note that lingers.

Indicative flavour positioning to help write a product brief. It is not sensory panel data, and the finished taste is set with you at sampling stage.

What has to be decided to make a gula melaka latte as a powder?

Moisture, mostly. Palm sugar is strongly hygroscopic, meaning it pulls water out of the air, and that single property drives the pack format, the flow agent and how the powder behaves on the line and on the shelf.

  • Caking is the main technical risk. A hygroscopic sugar in a powder will draw moisture, clump and eventually set hard. That is a formulation and packaging problem together, which is why the barrier film and the fill environment belong in the brief rather than being picked afterwards.
  • Real palm sugar or a flavour of it is a genuine choice. Using actual gula melaka carries the flavour and the story but brings the moisture behaviour with it. A gula melaka flavour system is more stable and cheaper but cannot carry the same label claim. Decide which one the brand is selling.
  • Colour tells the buyer it is real. Unrefined palm sugar darkens the powder. A pale beige gula melaka latte reads as artificial before it is tasted, so the target colour is specified alongside the taste.
  • Sweetness is already high, so the coffee has to be strong enough to balance it. A mild extract disappears entirely behind the sugar and the drink stops tasting like coffee at all.

What are the Halal risk points in a gula melaka latte powder?

The creamer and the emulsifier, not the sugar. Palm sugar is plant derived and straightforward. Non-dairy creamer brings sodium caseinate, which is milk derived, and mono- and diglycerides (E471), which can be plant or animal sourced under one name.

E471 is the most common single cause of a Halal hold-up in powder products precisely because the ingredient name does not distinguish the source. A plant-derived grade exists for nearly every application, but it has to be specified and certificated rather than assumed. Anti-caking agents, which a hygroscopic product like this is more likely to need, deserve the same check.

D&O manufactures under JAKIM Halal certification to MS 1500, and every raw material entering a Halal-certified line carries its own valid certificate. The full list is in Top 10 Ingredients That Fail Halal Certification.

Which pack formats suit gula melaka latte powder?

Sachet, stick pack, jar or bulk. The format is chosen with the formula rather than after it, because it decides how the powder is protected from moisture and how the buyer meets the product.

FormatWhat it suits
SachetThe default. A sealed single-serve sachet is the best protection a hygroscopic palm sugar powder can have.
Stick packSame protection, slimmer profile, suited to café-style retail bundles and e-commerce.
JarPossible but demanding: a jar opened daily exposes the powder to humidity repeatedly, so the formula has to be built for it.
BulkCafé and food service, where the powder is used quickly after opening.

Where is this manufactured, and under what certification?

At D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. in Lahat, Perak, Malaysia — six factory units certified Halal by JAKIM (MS 1500), GMP to MS 1514:2022 (SIRIM QAS, cert. GMP 00203), HACCP to MS 1480:2019 (SIRIM QAS, cert. HACCP 00425), ISO 22000 (SIRIM QAS, cert. FSMS 00229) and MeSTI (Ministry of Health, cert. ME0523069-0/1).

The plant is outside Ipoh, between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with road access to both Port Klang and Penang Port for export. Four units are used for production and two for packing and assembly, 4,000 sq ft each.

D&O is the powder functional food manufacturer of ORIZI Group. Liquid and ready-to-drink formats are made by Nutrizens Wellness Sdn. Bhd.; cosmetics, skincare and personal care by Dr Orizi; medical devices by Skyler and Imedify.

Certificates and their certified scope are supplied on request. JAKIM Halal certification is verifiable in the MYeHALAL directory, MeSTI in the Ministry of Health FoSIM system, and the GMP, HACCP and ISO 22000 certificates with SIRIM QAS International. The MS standards themselves are published by Standards Malaysia, and ISO 22000 by ISO.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gula melaka and brown sugar?
Source and processing. Gula melaka is palm sap boiled down and barely refined, so minerals and caramelised notes stay in, giving a smoky depth. Brown sugar is refined cane sugar with molasses added back. They are not interchangeable in a drink built around the sugar.
Why does gula melaka powder clump?
Because palm sugar is hygroscopic - it draws moisture out of the air. In an open or poorly sealed pack the powder absorbs water, clumps and eventually sets. It is why the pack format and barrier film are specified with the formula rather than after it.
Can a gula melaka latte be made with real palm sugar rather than a flavour?
Yes, and it is a real decision rather than a formality. Actual gula melaka carries both the flavour and the label claim but brings its moisture behaviour into the product. A flavour system is more stable and cheaper but cannot make the same claim.
Does gula melaka make the drink healthier than cane sugar?
It is still sugar. Palm sugar retains some minerals because it is barely refined, but any health positioning would need substantiation and may change how the product is regulated. Treat it as a flavour and provenance story rather than a nutrition claim.
Which pack format should I choose?
Sachets and stick packs suit single servings, trial sizes and e-commerce, because the dose is fixed and the barrier protects the powder. Jars suit repeat home use. Bulk suits a brand doing its own filling. Hygroscopic flavours, which draw moisture from the air, are better in a sealed sachet than in a jar that is opened daily.
Can a flavour be reformulated with less sugar?
Usually yes, but it is a reformulation rather than a deletion. Sugar carries bulk, mouthfeel and solubility in a powder, not only sweetness, so removing it changes how the drink dissolves and how full it tastes. Sweetener choice is set at sampling against the claim you intend to make.
Can D&O develop a flavour that is not in the library?
Yes. The library is what has been produced before, not a menu limit. Bring a reference product, a target taste or a competitor sample and the R&D lab benchmarks against it. Flavour development is part of the OEM brief rather than a separate service.
Where are the products made?
In Lahat, Perak, Malaysia. The plant runs six production and packaging halls plus an on-site R&D lab built in 2026. Perak sits in the middle of peninsular Malaysia with road access to Penang and Port Klang, which matters for export lead times more than most brand owners expect.
