OEM Tongkat Ali Coffee Powder Manufacturer in Malaysia

OEM & private label Tongkat Ali coffee powder - herbal 3-in-1 and sugar-free blends, Halal manufactured in sachet, stick pack or bulk for your brand.

What is Tongkat Ali and why is it blended into coffee?

Tongkat Ali is the root of Eurycoma longifolia, a slender shrub native to Indochina and Indonesia and long used in Malay traditional medicine. It is bitter, which is why coffee became its most successful carrier: the roast hides what a plain herbal drink cannot.

Eurycoma longifolia is a medium-sized, often unbranched shrub that can reach ten metres, and it is the root that is used. Malaysia treats it as a flagship botanical: it has a national standard, MS 2409, published by the Department of Standards Malaysia, which is unusual for a herbal raw material and matters to any exporter asked to prove what is in the pack.

The pairing with coffee is practical rather than traditional. Tongkat Ali extract is strongly bitter and herbal, and a dark Nanyang roast plus creamer and sugar absorbs that almost completely. The format also suits the usage pattern, because a sachet is a measured dose in a way a loose herbal powder is not.

Commercially this is one of the most exported Malaysian instant categories, which cuts both ways: the market recognises the product immediately, and it is also where the regulator looks hardest at what is claimed on the label.

What does tongkat ali coffee taste like?

A sweet, creamy 3-in-1 coffee with a bitter herbal undertow that appears in the finish rather than the first sip. The darker the roast and the fuller the creamer, the less of the root you taste - which is exactly why the blend exists.

CharacterLevelWhy
SweetnessHighMost Tongkat Ali coffee is sold 3-in-1; sugar is doing active work masking the root.
BitternessMediumCoffee roast plus herbal extract, held down by sugar and creamer rather than absent.
RoastHighA dark roast is chosen deliberately, because it is the cover for the extract.
CreaminessHighCreamer is structural here - it carries body and masks herbal notes.
AromaMediumRoast aroma leads; the root contributes an earthy note underneath it.

Indicative flavour positioning to help write a product brief. It is not sensory panel data, and the finished taste is set with you at sampling stage.

What has to be decided to make Tongkat Ali coffee as a powder?

The extract first, because everything else is built to accommodate it: which extract ratio, how much goes in, and what the label is allowed to say about it. Taste masking and regulatory classification are the same conversation here, not two.

  • The extract specification is the product. Tongkat Ali is sold at a range of extract ratios and the material varies by supplier. MS 2409 exists precisely because that variability is real, so the specification and its documentation are settled before the taste work starts.
  • Masking is a formulation target, not an afterthought. Roast level, creamer load and sweetener are all chosen against how much herbal bitterness has to be covered. Change the extract and the whole blend moves.
  • The claim decides the regulatory route. Sold as a coffee drink it is a food. Carry a health claim or a therapeutic dose and it falls to the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency and needs registration before sale. This is settled before artwork, not after.
  • Export markets treat botanicals differently. A herbal ingredient that is routine in Malaysia may be restricted or require dossier support elsewhere, so the destination market belongs in the brief.

What are the Halal risk points in a Tongkat Ali coffee powder?

The creamer, the emulsifier and the extraction solvent. The root itself is plant material, but botanical extracts are sometimes carried or standardised on materials that need their own certificate, and non-dairy creamer brings the usual dairy and E471 questions.

Extract carriers are the point most brands miss. A standardised botanical extract is rarely pure root powder - it may be carried on maltodextrin, gum arabic or another excipient, and ethanol is a common extraction solvent. Certification assesses what enters the plant, so the extract preparation needs its own Halal documentation rather than a statement that the plant is natural.

D&O manufactures under JAKIM Halal certification to MS 1500, and every raw material entering a Halal-certified line carries its own valid certificate. The recurring failure points are listed in Top 10 Ingredients That Fail Halal Certification.

Which pack formats suit tongkat ali coffee powder?

Sachet, stick pack, jar or bulk. The format is chosen with the formula rather than after it, because it decides how the powder is protected from moisture and how the buyer meets the product.

FormatWhat it suits
SachetThe dominant format, and for a functional ingredient the dose control is the reason rather than convenience.
Stick packTravel and export bundles; the slim profile suits airline and duty-free retail.
JarRare for this product - a functional ingredient is easier to control in a fixed single serve.
BulkFor brands filling their own sachets, or supplying a market that packs locally.

Where is this manufactured, and under what certification?

At D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. in Lahat, Perak, Malaysia — six factory units certified Halal by JAKIM (MS 1500), GMP to MS 1514:2022 (SIRIM QAS, cert. The plant is outside Ipoh, between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with road access to both Port Klang and Penang Port for export. Four units are used for production and two for packing and assembly, 4,000 sq ft each.

Certificates and their certified scope are supplied on request. JAKIM Halal certification is verifiable in the MYeHALAL directory, MeSTI in the Ministry of Health FoSIM system, and the GMP, HACCP and ISO 22000 certificates with SIRIM QAS International. The MS standards themselves are published by Standards Malaysia, and ISO 22000 by ISO.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Tongkat Ali usually sold as coffee rather than as a plain drink?
Because the root is strongly bitter and herbal. A dark coffee roast with creamer and sugar absorbs most of that, and the sachet gives a measured dose. The coffee is a carrier that solves a taste problem, not a traditional pairing.
Does Tongkat Ali coffee need NPRA registration?
It depends entirely on the claim. Sold as a coffee drink it is a food under the Food Act 1983. The moment it carries a health claim or a therapeutic dose it falls to NPRA and must be registered before sale. The claim decides it, not the ingredient.
What is MS 2409?
The Malaysian standard for Tongkat Ali, published by the Department of Standards Malaysia. It exists because herbal raw material varies widely between suppliers, and it gives an exporter something checkable to point at when a buyer asks what is actually in the pack.
Can Tongkat Ali coffee be made sugar-free?
Yes, but it is harder than for a plain coffee. Sugar is doing real masking work against the root's bitterness, so removing it exposes the herbal note. The sweetener system and the extract level are re-balanced together rather than the sugar simply being taken out.
Can products made here be exported to the United States?
Yes. A facility shipping food into the US must hold an FDA food facility registration under FSMA, which D&O does. Registration is a filing requirement, not an FDA approval or endorsement. Labelling and claims still have to meet US rules for your specific product.
Which certification does my product actually need?
It depends on the product and the destination market, not on the factory. MeSTI is the Malaysian baseline for food premises, GMP and HACCP cover process control, and ISO 22000 is the international food safety management standard. D&O holds all four plus JAKIM Halal, so the question at briefing is which ones your buyer or regulator asks to see.
Does a Halal-certified factory make every ingredient Halal?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Certification covers the plant and the materials running in it, so every raw material entering a Halal line needs its own valid certificate from its supplier. An assurance in an email is not a certificate. Substituting an ingredient late means re-sampling the formula.
Who is responsible for the label and artwork?
The brand owner owns the artwork and the claims on it. D&O supplies the product data the label must carry, such as ingredient declaration and nutritional information, and will flag where a claim would change the product's regulatory classification. Final approval of the printed label stays with the brand.
