Also known as Kopi putih

OEM & private label white coffee powder - 3-in-1, 2-in-1 and sugar-free Kopi Putih, Halal manufactured in sachet, stick pack or bulk for your brand.

Where does white coffee come from?

White coffee originated in Ipoh, Perak, and is the reason Lonely Planet named Ipoh one of the world's top three coffee towns. The name is a literal translation of its Chinese name, introduced in the 19th century by Chinese migrants working the Kinta Valley tin mines.

The beans are not white, and there is no Malaysian white coffee bean. The colour in the cup comes from the milk stirred into it. What makes the style distinct is the roast: the beans are roasted with palm oil margarine and taken to a lighter colour, which gives the slight caramelised note and the much lower bitterness that separates it from the dark, sugar-roasted beans used for Kopi O (Ipoh white coffee, Wikipedia).

The drink is served with sweetened condensed milk, and it spread from the Ipoh kopitiam across the country. The instant category grew out of that: coffee powder blended with non-dairy creamer and sugar, sold as 3-in-1 white coffee. Sugar-free 2-in-1 versions followed as manufacturers took the sugar out, and that reduced-sugar end is where most new brand briefs now sit.

For a brand owner this matters because Ipoh is not a marketing story here. D&O's plant is in Lahat, Perak - the same Kinta Valley, roughly fifteen minutes from Ipoh town. A white coffee made in Perak carries a provenance a factory elsewhere cannot claim honestly.

What does white coffee taste like?

Sweet and creamy with very little bitterness. The margarine roast gives a caramelised, nutty aroma and a light body, and the condensed milk or creamer it is built on carries that through. It is the mild end of Malaysian coffee - the opposite of Kopi O.

SweetnessBitternessRoastCreaminessAroma
CharacterLevelWhy
SweetnessHighServed with sweetened condensed milk; 3-in-1 blends carry sugar in the powder itself.
BitternessLowThe defining contrast with Kopi O - the lighter margarine roast is far less bitter.
RoastMediumLight to medium by definition; a dark roast would make it a different drink.
CreaminessHighCondensed milk or non-dairy creamer is structural to the style, not an option.
AromaHighThe margarine roast produces the caramelised, nutty note the category is known for.

Indicative flavour positioning to help write a product brief. It is not sensory panel data, and the finished taste is set with you at sampling stage.

What has to be decided to make white coffee as a powder?

Four things, and none of them is the coffee itself: the creamer, the sugar level, the solubility target and the pack format. The roast is set upstream at the bean supplier, so what gets specified at OEM stage is the blend around it.

  • The creamer decides the product. Non-dairy creamer carries the body, the colour in the cup and much of the cost. It is also where the Halal and labelling questions live, because a creamer is itself a blend rather than a single ingredient.
  • Sugar is structural, not just sweet. It carries bulk, mouthfeel and dissolving behaviour. Taking it out for a 2-in-1 or sugar-free claim changes how the drink dissolves and how full it tastes, so it is a reformulation rather than a deletion.
  • Solubility is the complaint you will get. White coffee is made by stirring into hot water at kopitiam pace. A powder that needs vigorous stirring, or leaves a ring in the cup, reads as a cheap product however good the taste is.
  • Pack format is specified with the formula, not after it. Creamer-heavy powders draw moisture from the air, which is why the sachet and its barrier film belong in the brief rather than in a later conversation.

What are the Halal risk points in a white coffee powder?

Not the coffee - the creamer and the emulsifier. Non-dairy creamer commonly contains sodium caseinate, which is milk derived, and mono- and diglycerides (E471), which can be plant or animal derived under the same ingredient name.

E471 is the single most common cause of a Halal hold-up in powder products, because the name is identical whether the source is plant oil or animal fat. A plant-derived grade exists for practically every application; it is simply not always what a supplier quotes by default. The same question applies to the margarine used in the roast, upstream of the blend.

D&O manufactures under JAKIM Halal certification to MS 1500, and every raw material entering a Halal-certified line carries its own valid certificate. The full list of ingredients that hold up certification in powder products is set out in Top 10 Ingredients That Fail Halal Certification.

Which pack formats suit white coffee powder?

Sachet, stick pack, jar or bulk. The format is chosen with the formula rather than after it, because it decides how the powder is protected from moisture and how the buyer meets the product.

FormatWhat it suits
Sachet3-in-1 and 2-in-1 single serve. The default for white coffee: fixed dose, moisture barrier, and the format the category trained buyers on.
Stick packSlimmer profile for e-commerce and travel packs, with the same fixed-dose logic as a sachet.
JarRepeat home use. Opened daily, so the formula has to tolerate moisture ingress better than a sachet blend does.
BulkFor brands filling their own sachets, or supplying food service and hotel amenity lines.

Where is this manufactured, and under what certification?

At D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. in Lahat, Perak, Malaysia — six factory units certified Halal by JAKIM (MS 1500), GMP to MS 1514:2022 (SIRIM QAS, cert. GMP 00203), HACCP to MS 1480:2019 (SIRIM QAS, cert. HACCP 00425), ISO 22000 (SIRIM QAS, cert. FSMS 00229) and MeSTI (Ministry of Health, cert. ME0523069-0/1).

The plant is outside Ipoh, between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with road access to both Port Klang and Penang Port for export. Four units are used for production and two for packing and assembly, 4,000 sq ft each.

D&O is the powder functional food manufacturer of ORIZI Group. Liquid and ready-to-drink formats are made by Nutrizens Wellness Sdn. Bhd.; cosmetics, skincare and personal care by Dr Orizi; medical devices by Skyler and Imedify.

Certificates and their certified scope are supplied on request. JAKIM Halal certification is verifiable in the MYeHALAL directory, MeSTI in the Ministry of Health FoSIM system, and the GMP, HACCP and ISO 22000 certificates with SIRIM QAS International. The MS standards themselves are published by Standards Malaysia, and ISO 22000 by ISO.

Frequently asked questions

Is white coffee actually made from white coffee beans?
No. There is no white coffee bean. The beans are ordinary imported beans roasted light with palm oil margarine, and the white in the name is a literal translation of the Chinese name. The pale colour in the cup comes from the condensed milk stirred into it.
What is the difference between white coffee and Kopi O?
The roast and the milk. White coffee beans are roasted with margarine to a lighter colour, giving a caramelised, low-bitterness cup served with condensed milk. Kopi O beans are roasted darker with sugar and served black, which is why it tastes markedly more bitter.
Can white coffee be made sugar-free?
Yes - that is the 2-in-1 category, coffee and creamer without added sugar. Because sugar also carries bulk and mouthfeel in a powder, removing it is a reformulation: sweetener, creamer level and dissolving behaviour are re-set together at sampling.
Does white coffee have to be made in Ipoh?
There is no protected designation, so any factory may use the term. What differs is provenance. D&O manufactures in Lahat, Perak, in the same Kinta Valley the style came from, which is a claim a brand can make plainly rather than imply.
Which pack format should I choose?
Sachets and stick packs suit single servings, trial sizes and e-commerce, because the dose is fixed and the barrier protects the powder. Jars suit repeat home use. Bulk suits a brand doing its own filling. Hygroscopic flavours, which draw moisture from the air, are better in a sealed sachet than in a jar that is opened daily.
Does a Halal-certified factory make every ingredient Halal?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Certification covers the plant and the materials running in it, so every raw material entering a Halal line needs its own valid certificate from its supplier. An assurance in an email is not a certificate. Substituting an ingredient late means re-sampling the formula.
Can a flavour be reformulated with less sugar?
Usually yes, but it is a reformulation rather than a deletion. Sugar carries bulk, mouthfeel and solubility in a powder, not only sweetness, so removing it changes how the drink dissolves and how full it tastes. Sweetener choice is set at sampling against the claim you intend to make.
Will my product be classified as a food or as a health supplement?
The claim decides it, not the format. A powder sold as a drink is a food under the Food Act 1983. The moment it carries a health claim or a therapeutic dose it falls to the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency, which requires product registration before sale. Settle this before artwork, because it changes the label.
