Searching "Halal supplement manufacturer Malaysia" returns hundreds of results. Some are factories. Many are trading companies, brokers or marketing agencies who will place your order somewhere else and add a margin.
Nothing is wrong with a broker if you know that is what you are buying. The problem is finding out later — usually when a formulation question gets an answer three days late because it had to be forwarded to someone you were never told about.
These seven checks separate the two, and none of them requires technical knowledge to ask.
1. Do they own the factory?
Ask where the blending physically happens, who runs quality control, and whether you can visit. A manufacturer answers all three immediately. A trading company hesitates on at least one.
Follow-ups that settle it quickly:
- What is the registered company name on the Halal certificate, and does it match the company invoicing you?
- Which certificates are held in that company's own name?
- Can I see the production area, not only the meeting room?

2. Does the Halal certificate cover your product type?
Halal certification has a defined scope. A certificate covering beverage powders does not automatically cover a savoury seasoning line or a capsule product. Ask for the certificate that covers what you want made, not a general statement that the factory is Halal certified.
This is the single most common gap. JAKIM certification is issued to a company and premises for a specified range of products, certified for food against MS 1500. Adding a new product category to an existing certificate is a process, not a formality.
Ask directly: "Is the product I want listed in your certified scope, and can I see that page of the certificate?"
3. What other certifications does the factory hold?
Halal answers whether a Muslim consumer may use the product. It does not answer whether the factory is run properly. GMP, HACCP, ISO 22000 and MeSTI answer that, and each is audited by a different body against a published standard.

4. Will they make your format at your volume?
A factory geared for 25 kg bulk drums and a factory geared for 2 g sachets in 15-count boxes are running different equipment. Ask which filling lines they actually operate before discussing anything else.
For the Malaysian market this matters more than it does elsewhere, because the format that moves fastest online is the small sachet sold in a multi-pack box at a low trial price. If your plan is a TikTok Shop launch, a factory that cannot fill stick packs is the wrong factory regardless of how good its formulation team is.
Minimum order quantities are a function of format and run size, so expect them to be quoted against your brief rather than published as one number.
5. Who owns the formula?
Under an OEM arrangement, the formula developed to your brief should be yours, and should not be offered to the next client. Get that in writing before development starts, not after the first sample.
Ask what happens if you move production elsewhere later. The answer tells you a great deal about how the relationship is intended to work.
6. Can they support product registration and label compliance?
The factory's certification does not cover your label. Product registration, permitted ingredients, nutrition panel format and claims are the brand owner's responsibility — but a competent manufacturer knows the requirements and will flag a problem before the run rather than after it.
The claims question is the one that catches people. A Halal certificate says nothing about whether you may describe a product as "detox", "immune-boosting" or "clinically proven". Those are separate regulatory questions with their own evidence requirements.
7. Do they sell competing brands?
A manufacturer that also runs its own retail brands in your category is, on some level, your competitor. Ask directly. There is no wrong answer, but there is a wrong assumption.

A checklist you can send as an email
Copy this into your first message to any shortlisted manufacturer:
- Which company name holds the Halal certificate, and is it the company invoicing me?
- Is my product type inside your certified Halal scope?
- Which of GMP, HACCP, ISO 22000 and MeSTI do you hold, and under which numbers?
- Which fill formats do you run in-house — sachet, stick pack, jar, tin, bulk?
- Under an OEM arrangement, who owns the formula?
- Do you manufacture your own retail brands in this category?
- Can I visit the plant?
If a supplier cannot answer those seven in one reply, that is itself the answer.

Is JAKIM Halal certification recognised outside Malaysia? It is recognised or accepted across Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Gulf markets, subject to the arrangements in force for that market and product category. Check the specific destination before planning a launch around it.
