OEM Calamansi Powder Manufacturer in Malaysia

Also known as Limau kasturi

OEM & private label calamansi powder - limau kasturi drink and vitamin C sachet, Halal manufactured in sachet, stick pack or bulk for your brand.

What is calamansi?

A citrus hybrid native to the Philippines, growing south into Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia and north to Taiwan and southern China. It is known as limau kasturi in Malay and is sharper and more aromatic than lime, with a thin skin and a strongly perfumed peel.

Calamansi is also called calamondin or Philippine lime, and it is cultivated predominantly in the Philippines where it is a daily kitchen citrus rather than a specialty one. In Malaysia limau kasturi turns up squeezed over noodles, in sambal, and in the drink that pairs it with asam boi.

What distinguishes it from lemon or lime is where the character sits. Much of calamansi's identity is in the peel oil rather than the juice - a floral, almost tangerine note over a very sharp acidity. Products built only on the juice taste sour but not like calamansi.

Commercially it has two distinct lives: a refreshment flavour, and a vitamin C carrier. Which one a brand is building changes almost every decision that follows.

What does calamansi taste like?

Very sharp and clean, with a floral, almost tangerine aroma over the acidity that lemon and lime do not have. More perfumed than sour-tasting on the nose, and bracing rather than sweet on the palate.

SweetnessBitternessRoastCreaminessAroma
CharacterLevelWhy
SweetnessLowThe fruit itself is not sweet; any sweetness in a product is added to make it drinkable.
BitternessMediumPeel oil carries a genuine citrus bitterness - part of the character, not a fault.
RoastLowNo roasting or heat development anywhere in a citrus product.
CreaminessLowHigh acid and dairy do not combine well; calamansi is used in clear drinks.
AromaHighPeel oil is where the flavour lives, and it is strongly floral and volatile.

Indicative flavour positioning to help write a product brief. It is not sensory panel data, and the finished taste is set with you at sampling stage.

What has to be decided to make calamansi as a powder?

How to keep the aroma and contain the acid. Citrus character lives in volatile peel oils that processing strips, and a high-acid powder draws moisture and attacks both the powder's own stability and the pack it sits in.

  • Juice alone will not taste like calamansi. The recognisable floral note is in the peel oil. A powder built from juice solids is sour but anonymous, which is why oil or a peel-derived flavour is normally part of the specification.
  • Citrus oils are volatile and oxidise. They are lost to heat during drying and degrade in contact with air afterwards, so aromatic load is specified knowing some is lost, and the pack is chosen to protect the rest.
  • Acid is hygroscopic and aggressive. A high-acid powder draws moisture, cakes, and can attack unsuitable packaging from the inside. The barrier material is a formulation-level decision here rather than a cost line.
  • Decide whether vitamin C is a claim. Calamansi is often used as a vitamin C carrier. Fortifying it and claiming a level means the level has to hold to end of shelf life, and ascorbic acid degrades - so that is a stability commitment, not a label line.

What are the Halal risk points in a calamansi powder?

The flavour carrier is the main one. Citrus oils and flavours are very commonly carried in ethanol, and this is a flavour that relies on an oil component more than most, so the question is more likely to arise here than in a sugar-led product.

Certification assesses what enters the plant rather than what survives into the finished powder, so an ethanol-carried citrus flavour has to be replaced with a Halal-certified equivalent at briefing. Most flavour houses maintain both, and the certified version can have a slightly different profile - which is why it is assessed at bench-sample stage rather than swapped in late.

D&O manufactures under JAKIM Halal certification to MS 1500, and every raw material on a Halal-certified line carries its own valid certificate. The recurring failure points are listed in Top 10 Ingredients That Fail Halal Certification.

Which pack formats suit calamansi powder?

Sachet, stick pack, jar or bulk. The format is chosen with the formula rather than after it, because it decides how the powder is protected from moisture and how the buyer meets the product.

FormatWhat it suits
SachetSingle serve, and the best protection available for a volatile, moisture-hungry powder.
Stick packVitamin C and refreshment ranges, where a slim single dose suits the use occasion.
JarDifficult. Repeated opening costs aroma and lets moisture into an already hygroscopic powder.
BulkBeverage shop and food service, where turnover is fast enough that aroma loss does not bite.

Where is this manufactured, and under what certification?

At D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. in Lahat, Perak, Malaysia — six factory units certified Halal by JAKIM (MS 1500), GMP to MS 1514:2022 (SIRIM QAS, cert. Frequently asked questions

How is calamansi different from lime?
It is sharper and much more aromatic, with a floral, almost tangerine note that lime does not have. That note comes from the peel oil rather than the juice, which is why calamansi smells distinctive even when the acidity is similar.
Why do some calamansi powders taste merely sour?
Because they are built on juice solids alone. The character that makes calamansi recognisable sits in the peel oil, and without an oil or peel-derived component the product is acidic but anonymous.
Why does citrus powder cake and attack packaging?
High acid content is hygroscopic, so the powder draws moisture and clumps, and the acidity can degrade unsuitable pack materials from the inside. The barrier film is chosen as part of the formulation rather than as a cost decision.
Can a calamansi sachet carry a vitamin C claim?
It can, but the claim is a commitment. Ascorbic acid degrades over time and with heat, so the declared level has to hold to the end of shelf life. That means stability testing on the actual formula in the actual pack, not a number taken from the raw material.
How is shelf life decided?
By stability testing on your actual formula in your actual pack, not by a number quoted upfront. The powder, the barrier film and the destination climate all move it. Moisture is what usually ends a powder's life, which is why pack format is specified alongside the formula rather than after it.
Will my product be classified as a food or as a health supplement?
The claim decides it, not the format. A powder sold as a drink is a food under the Food Act 1983. The moment it carries a health claim or a therapeutic dose it falls to the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency, which requires product registration before sale. Settle this before artwork, because it changes the label.
Does a Halal-certified factory make every ingredient Halal?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding. Certification covers the plant and the materials running in it, so every raw material entering a Halal line needs its own valid certificate from its supplier. An assurance in an email is not a certificate. Substituting an ingredient late means re-sampling the formula.
Can products made here be exported to the United States?
Yes. A facility shipping food into the US must hold an FDA food facility registration under FSMA, which D&O does. Registration is a filing requirement, not an FDA approval or endorsement. Labelling and claims still have to meet US rules for your specific product.
