OEM Teh Halia Powder Manufacturer in Malaysia

Also known as Ginger milk tea

OEM & private label teh halia powder - ginger milk tea in 3-in-1 and sugar-free blends, Halal manufactured in sachet, stick pack or bulk for your brand.

What is teh halia?

Teh halia is teh tarik with ginger. Halia is Malay for ginger, and the drink is the same strong black tea and condensed milk base with ginger brewed through it - warming, slightly hot in the throat, and a mamak stall fixture alongside plain teh tarik.

Ginger is a rhizome used both as a spice and in folk medicine across the region, which is why teh halia carries a wellness association that plain teh tarik does not. It is ordered when someone feels a cold coming on as often as it is ordered for the taste.

The pungency is not fixed. Fresh ginger's heat comes mainly from gingerol; when ginger is dried or heated, gingerol converts toward shogaol, which is sharper. That is why dried ginger powder and fresh ginger taste different rather than simply weaker or stronger, and it is the single fact that most affects how this drink behaves as an instant product.

For a brand, teh halia sits in a useful position: familiar enough to need no explanation in Malaysia, and distinct enough abroad to be the thing that makes a milk-tea range worth importing.

What does teh halia taste like?

Sweet, milky and tannic like teh tarik, with a clean ginger heat that builds in the throat after swallowing rather than hitting the tongue first. Warming rather than spicy, and more aromatic than hot.

Indicative flavour positioning to help write a product brief. It is not sensory panel data, and the finished taste is set with you at sampling stage.

What has to be decided to make teh halia as a powder?

Which ginger, and how much heat survives. Ginger's pungency shifts when it is dried, and the aromatic part is volatile and easily lost in processing, so the form of ginger used decides the character of the finished drink more than the dose does.

  • Dried ginger is not weaker fresh ginger, it is different ginger. Drying and heat push gingerol toward shogaol, which reads sharper and less rounded. A formula targeted at fresh-ginger character has to account for that rather than simply adding more.
  • The aroma is volatile and processing costs you some of it. The part of ginger a drinker notices first is the smell. Heat steps that are fine for tea and milk are not free for ginger, so the aromatic load is specified knowing some of it will not survive.
  • Ginger is fibrous, which rules some forms out. Whole ground ginger brings insoluble fibre that will not dissolve and shows as sediment. Extract or soluble ginger forms behave better in an instant powder but taste different, so this is a real choice rather than a technicality.
  • Heat level is a positioning decision. A Malaysian audience expects a genuine throat warmth; an export audience often wants it gentler. Pick one at briefing, because the same formula will not serve both.

What are the Halal risk points in a teh halia powder?

The milk system, the emulsifier and the ginger extract's carrier. Ginger itself is plant material, but a soluble ginger extract is usually carried on an excipient and may be produced with solvents that need their own certification.

Flavour and extract carriers are the recurring gap. An ethanol-carried ginger flavour may leave almost nothing in the finished powder, but Halal certification assesses what enters the plant, not what survives. The same applies to maltodextrin or gum carriers and to mono- and diglycerides (E471) in the creamer, which can be plant or animal derived under one name.

D&O manufactures under JAKIM Halal certification to MS 1500, and every raw material on a Halal-certified line carries its own valid certificate. The common failure points are set out in Top 10 Ingredients That Fail Halal Certification.

Which pack formats suit teh halia powder?

Sachet, stick pack, jar or bulk. The format is chosen with the formula rather than after it, because it decides how the powder is protected from moisture and how the buyer meets the product.

FormatWhat it suits
SachetSingle-serve 3-in-1. Fixed dose matters for a product where heat level is part of the promise.
Stick packTravel and seasonal packs - ginger drinks sell harder in cool and wet months.
JarRepeat home use, though aromatics fade faster in a jar opened daily than in a sealed sachet.
BulkMamak and food service supply, and brands filling their own sachets.

Where is this manufactured, and under what certification?

At D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. in Lahat, Perak, Malaysia — six factory units certified Halal by JAKIM (MS 1500), GMP to MS 1514:2022 (SIRIM QAS, cert. GMP 00203), HACCP to MS 1480:2019 (SIRIM QAS, cert. HACCP 00425), ISO 22000 (SIRIM QAS, cert. FSMS 00229) and MeSTI (Ministry of Health, cert. ME0523069-0/1).

The plant is outside Ipoh, between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with road access to both Port Klang and Penang Port for export. Four units are used for production and two for packing and assembly, 4,000 sq ft each.

D&O is the powder functional food manufacturer of ORIZI Group. Liquid and ready-to-drink formats are made by Nutrizens Wellness Sdn. Bhd.; cosmetics, skincare and personal care by Dr Orizi; medical devices by Skyler and Imedify.

Certificates and their certified scope are supplied on request. JAKIM Halal certification is verifiable in the MYeHALAL directory, MeSTI in the Ministry of Health FoSIM system, and the GMP, HACCP and ISO 22000 certificates with SIRIM QAS International. The MS standards themselves are published by Standards Malaysia, and ISO 22000 by ISO.

Frequently asked questions

Is teh halia just teh tarik with ginger added?
In structure yes - the same strong black tea and condensed milk base. In practice the ginger changes the balance, because its heat and aroma compete with the tea tannin, so a good teh halia is re-balanced rather than teh tarik with one more ingredient.
Why does instant teh halia sometimes taste sharp rather than warming?
Usually because the ginger is dried. Drying and heat convert gingerol toward shogaol, which reads sharper and less rounded than fresh ginger. It is a different character, not a stronger one, and the formula has to be built for whichever is wanted.
Can ground ginger be used directly in the powder?
It can, but it brings insoluble fibre that will not dissolve and shows as sediment in the cup. Soluble ginger extracts avoid that and behave far better in an instant product, at the cost of tasting somewhat different from freshly brewed.
Can teh halia carry a health claim?
Not without consequences. Ginger has a long folk-medicine association, but the moment a product makes a health claim it may be regulated as a supplement rather than a food and require registration before sale. Decide the positioning before the label is designed.
Will my product be classified as a food or as a health supplement?
The claim decides it, not the format. A powder sold as a drink is a food under the Food Act 1983. The moment it carries a health claim or a therapeutic dose it falls to the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency, which requires product registration before sale. Settle this before artwork, because it changes the label.
Can D&O develop a flavour that is not in the library?
Yes. The library is what has been produced before, not a menu limit. Bring a reference product, a target taste or a competitor sample and the R&D lab benchmarks against it. Flavour development is part of the OEM brief rather than a separate service.
How is shelf life decided?
By stability testing on your actual formula in your actual pack, not by a number quoted upfront. The powder, the barrier film and the destination climate all move it. Moisture is what usually ends a powder's life, which is why pack format is specified alongside the formula rather than after it.
Which certification does my product actually need?
It depends on the product and the destination market, not on the factory. MeSTI is the Malaysian baseline for food premises, GMP and HACCP cover process control, and ISO 22000 is the international food safety management standard. D&O holds all four plus JAKIM Halal, so the question at briefing is which ones your buyer or regulator asks to see.
