The same collagen, protein or fibre powder can be sold as a functional food or as a health supplement. The choice changes the formula, the pack and the shelf it sits on. D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing makes both kinds of powder, and in October 2026 received the Malaysia Health Brand Award for Functional Food, Nutraceutical & Health Supplement Manufacturing.
Is my powder product a functional food or a health supplement?
It depends on how the product is meant to be used. A functional food is enjoyed as a food or drink with an added health purpose, such as a daily collagen drink or a fibre-rich cereal drink. A health supplement is taken as a measured serving of an active ingredient, such as a vitamin C stick pack. Nutraceutical is the industry word that covers both.
| Positioned as functional food | Positioned as health supplement | |
|---|---|---|
| The buyer thinks | "A healthier drink I enjoy every day" | "A daily dose of something my body needs" |
| Formula priority | Taste, mixability, texture | Active amount per serving |
| Typical serving | A full drink, mixed into water or milk | A small single dose |
| Typical pack | Box of 10–15 sachets, jar or tin | Stick packs, small sachet boxes |
| Where it sells | Supermarkets, social commerce, agents | Pharmacies, clinics, e-commerce |
Each product is set against its own brief. In Malaysia, ingredients, dose and claims also decide whether a product is sold as food or registered with NPRA (MAL). Our powder products are made as food, and the group's guide on food vs MAL explains how that decision is made.
Which powder products suit each positioning?
Collagen, protein, fibre, malt, cereal and coffee drinks usually work best as functional food. Single actives such as vitamin C, electrolytes or probiotics are often positioned as supplements in stick packs.
See the product pages for collagen powder, protein powder, dietary fibre, electrolyte powder and probiotic powder, and our sachet, stick pack, jar and bulk format guide.

Does an award mean a factory can make my product?
No. An award is an outside signal; the certificates are what cover your product. Ask any powder manufacturer for its GMP, HACCP and ISO 22000 certificates, check that the scope includes your format, and confirm Halal listing for the named product if you will claim Halal.
D&O's plant is certified for GMP (MS 1514), HACCP (MS 1480) and ISO 22000 by SIRIM QAS, holds Ministry of Health GMP, HACCP and MeSTI certificates, JAKIM Halal certification and US FDA food facility registration. The full list is in our article on the ASEAN Records listing, and MeSTI, GMP, HACCP or ISO 22000 explains what each covers. Before you sign with anyone, run through the top 10 questions to ask an OEM supplement manufacturer.

D&O is part of ORIZI Group. The group's guide to functional food vs nutraceutical vs health supplement covers the terms in more depth.

Frequently asked questions
Can the same powder be sold as a functional food and as a supplement?
The same base ingredient can, but not the same product. The serving size, the active amount, the label and the claims are set differently for each, so they are developed as two products.
Is a sachet or a stick pack better for a supplement powder?
Stick packs suit small single doses and look like a supplement. Sachets suit larger drink servings and look like a food. Both are made on our lines.
Which company won the Malaysia Health Brand Award 2026 for functional food manufacturing?
D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (ORIZI Group), in the Functional Food, Nutraceutical & Health Supplement Manufacturing category of the Made for the World Excellence Awards 2026.
