Vitamin and mineral products look like the simplest thing a supplement manufacturer makes. A premix, a base, a flavour. In practice they carry more regulatory weight per gram than anything else we produce, because every number on the panel is a commitment that has to still be true at the end of shelf life.

What does an OEM vitamin and mineral supplement manufacturer do?

Selects or specifies the vitamin and mineral premix, calculates overage so the declared values hold through shelf life, builds a base and flavour system that masks the premix, handles the Halal documentation for every component, fills into your chosen format, and produces the data behind your nutrition panel.

You own the brand, the formula and the label. The factory owns the plant, the process and the responsibility for making the panel true.

What is a premix, and why does it decide so much?

A premix is a pre-blended combination of vitamins and minerals supplied as a single ingredient. Using one is standard practice, because weighing micro-doses of a dozen nutrients accurately at production scale is not realistic.

The premix decides more than people expect:

  • Taste. Most premixes are unpleasant. B vitamins are bitter, iron is metallic, zinc is astringent. The flavour system exists mostly to cover them.
  • Colour. Riboflavin turns things yellow whether you want that or not.
  • Halal status. Vitamins A, D and E are fat-soluble and are often supplied on a carrier or gelatine coated. Vitamin D3 is frequently lanolin-derived.
  • Stability. Vitamin C and vitamin A degrade over shelf life, so the premix and the packaging have to be chosen together.

⚠️ The premix is the hardest component to substitute late. Changing it changes the entire nutritional declaration, so it changes the label as well as the formula.

What is overage, and why does the label depend on it?

Overage means adding more of a nutrient at production than the label declares, so that the declared value is still met at the end of shelf life. It is normal, expected practice for unstable nutrients — not a way of inflating a claim.

Vitamin C, vitamin A and folate all decline over time, faster with heat, moisture and oxygen. A product formulated to exactly the declared value on production day will be under-declared six months later.

This is why declared values should be supported by stability data rather than calculated from the recipe.

Which basis should the label use — RNI, NRV or per serving?

Malaysian labels commonly express micronutrients as a percentage of the Malaysian RNI (Recommended Nutrient Intake). Export markets use their own reference values, so a product intended for both usually needs two panels.

Decide the basis at the brief stage. It affects the dosage you choose, not just how it is printed.

What formats suit vitamin and mineral products?

FormatSuitsNotes
Effervescent sachet or stickDaily vitamin C, immunityHigh perceived value, needs careful moisture control

D&O manufactures powder formats. Tablet and capsule are made elsewhere in the group or by specialist manufacturers.

Where do vitamin products fail Halal certification?

Almost never in the vitamin itself. The failures are in the carrier, the coating and the premix's own supporting ingredients.

  • Vitamin D3 is frequently lanolin-derived — ask for the source and the certificate.
  • Fat-soluble vitamins are commonly gelatine-coated for stability.
  • Flow agents such as magnesium stearate may be plant or animal derived.
  • The premix as a whole needs a Halal certificate covering it, not a certificate for each vitamin separately.

Halal-certified premixes exist and should be specified from the beginning. See the ten ingredients that fail Halal certification.

What claims can a vitamin product make in Malaysia?

Nutrient content claims — "high in vitamin C", "source of zinc" — are governed by defined thresholds. Function claims are more restricted. Disease claims are not permitted.

Decide the claim before development, because it sets the minimum dosage. A product formulated first and claimed afterwards frequently cannot support the claim the marketing needs.

What a good brief looks like

  • Which nutrients, and at what percentage of the reference intake
  • The market or markets, since the reference basis differs
  • Format and serving size
  • Flavour direction, and any reference product
  • Target retail price per unit
  • Claims you intend to make
  • Halal requirement, stated explicitly

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a premix, or can nutrients be added individually? A premix is standard for micro-dosed nutrients, because weighing them individually at production scale is not accurate enough.

Why does my vitamin product taste bitter? B vitamins and minerals carry bitterness, metallic and astringent notes. The flavour system exists to mask them, and it is usually the most developed part of the formula.

What is overage and is it legitimate? It is adding more at production so the declared value still holds at the end of shelf life. It is standard practice for unstable nutrients and is supported by stability data.

Can vitamin products be Halal certified? Yes, with Halal-certified premixes and documented carriers and coatings. Specify it from the start.

Does D&O make tablets or capsules? D&O manufactures powder formats. Other formats sit with other ORIZI Group companies or specialist manufacturers.
